- Bridgetown Abbey is on the North of the Blackwater. It was built by Alexander Fitz Hugh Roche in 1314, for the order of Canons regular of St Agustine or, as some say, (the order of St Victor) Roche was a Norman and he got monks from Meath.
There were two wooden bridges across the Blackwater. There is no sign of bridges now. There was a large tower to defend the monastery from the enemy. He built a lot of castles by the river to defend the gap of the Nagle mountains. The monks had much land on both sides of the river. Wheat, oats and other crops were grown on the "Gráinseac" side of the river.
Mass was said every morning in a large room. After it the monks went teaching young people of the surrounding district. Each monk had his own charge. Some praying, others teaching, and others working on the farm. There was a large refrectory in the Abbey with a beautiful cut stone over the door. When Cromwell came he had battle with the monks.
