Near the fire there was a place called an "out shot". This was an alcove in the wall where a bed could be placed. The floors were made of cement but the floors that were in the rooms were made of clay.
The fireplace was placed between the wall dividing the room from the kitchen. People never remember of fires in the middle of the floors.
