  1. I live in the village of Carrownalthore. Carrownalthore or Ceathramhadh na hOltóra mean the quarter or district of the alter. Long ago when the "Penal Laws" were in force the priests used to read in mass in a backward place so they read mass here unknown to the soldiers. Carrownalthore is on the side of a hill and there is a view for miles of the surrounding country so that it was impossible for the soldier to come unknown to them. From the fact that mass was read here the place gets its name.
