    a thin piece of wood, others a knife if they could get one; when peeled they were put into cold water till morning.
    Every housekeeper knew how to make starch for the skirts. It was often you could hear two women talking about the white shirts, that were starched and worn by the men, one of them always having the last word, saying her man's shirt was the whitest:
