  1. Local Heroes
    Two of the best stone throwers in this district were Laurence Hughes and Owen Vahey they lived in Carrowntober.
    Carrowntober is a village about two miles from Balla. These two men threw a half hundred weight twenty feet or more.
    Laurence Hughes was also a great walker, one night he and Durkan were at Peter Coughters wake and they stayed there till morning and then they set off for Manulla Gunction and when the were coming in cutting the train was just whisting and learning this train was called the 'Harvest man's train'.
