- Old houses were thatched some of them had wattle roofs. There are some of them left yet. The houses are slated now. There are beds in the kitchens of the old houses they are called hags. The thatch was made from rushes or straw and it was tied down with scallops. The rushes were got growing in the bad land. Straw is mostly used now. The fireplace was in the gable of the house. The chimney was made of stone. The fireplace was in the middle of the floor in earlier times. I heard of houses having no chimneys but there was a hole in the roof. They had the fire in the middle of the floor and the smoke going out the hole in the roof and out the door. I heard of houses having no glass in the windows. They used to have shutters instead. This was told to me by - Mr Keville,
