  1. In our farm it is a common practice to sow potatoes. We sow about and acre each year. The acreage does not vary. The men plough and harrow the land, and while they are doing this, the women (are) slit the early potatoes. When the men have ploughed and harrowed the land they scatter the manure, leave the slits and mould them. In about a fortnight they mould them again. If they do not get plenty of rain before the stalks appear a bad crop may be expected. On our land it is ridges that are usually used. The farmer who lives next to us has a handle of a wooden plough. John Kelly, who lives about a mile from our house, has a wooden plough also. It is an iron plough that is used nowadays. When the people sow in ridges the use a spade.
