  1. There are fairs held in Ballyhaunis twice each month, one for cattle and the other for pigs. Buyers never transact business in the country nowadays, but, sometimes butchers come out through the country and buy fat sheep or cattle. Fairs were held in Ballinacostello, which is situated between Aughamore and Kilkelly, but they have been discontinued. Ballinacostello is only a village and on that account few buyers came to the fairs there.
    The cattle fair of Ballyhaunis is held behind a hill, in upper Main Street, but the pigs and sheep are sold through the streets. Toll is paid on every animal sold, usually sixpence on cows, fourpence on calves, threepence on pigs and twopence on sheep. When an animal is sold luck money is always given, half a crown on cattle and one shilling on calves, (cattle) sheep and pigs. When the bargain is made both the buyer and the
