  1. There was a man in Claremorris and he used to hang men in the penal days. He used to bring his cart into the town and hang them off the shafts of the cart. He had about thirty soldiers to catch any man that did anything wrong against his laws. Once he was trying to catch a man named Martin Prendergast. One day when his soldiers were gone Martin broke in the door and he had a rifle and he said he would kill him if his soldiers were tried to catch him again. When his soldiers came back he said "I will never hang another man as long as I live.
