  1. I live in Barroe which means "Red Top". this name is given to it on account of the colours of the soil. It is situated in the parish of Carracastle and in the Barony of Costello. There are seven hundred and seventy five acres, and nice square perch in it but about one third if this is bog land. There are about forty houses in it the majority of them are slated. It is divided into three parts namely Barroe Rock, Barroe East and Barroe Midd. There are no lakes in it but there is one river which some years ago was the means of working the mill at McGarry's the tuck mill for thickening frieze and the corn mill for grinding corn. Those mills are now stopped, but the ruins of them are still to be seen. Two families left Barroe: One of them Lavins went to England and the other Rush went to
