1. Holy Well

   There is a holy well in our parish “Kilbeagh”. It is situated in the townland of Tample in Ann Gallagher’s field. It is called St. Attracta’s well because she knelt and prayed there once upon a time. It is said that St. Attracta came from the north. Her father wanted her to marry a rich prince, but she fled from home. She first came to Boyle, and she built a church there. It is said she came to Tample and prayed at the well. There is an altar there also made with stones. There is a stone beside Doherty’s house shaped like a skull. There is a stone in Brady’s land with the impression of knees where St. Attracta knelt and prayed.

   There is a pattern held there every year in her honour on the eleventh of August. On that day all the people visit the well. The priest says the rosary. When the rosary is finished the people gather round the well and throw money and other things into it. No one uses the water of this well for house purposes. The people that are living near the well say that water will not boil.
