   It was going on for one o'clock and each man had only taken some tea, a mere allowance from home to tide over the night.
   As we were moored only sixteen yards from the shore we could hear distinctly the voices, and see the powerful lights. The first thing we heard was the plying of an axe on a tree over the bank and when all the wood was cut we could hear the strange voices speaking to one another in a language we never heard before or I believe since the heavens were opened for them to get out.
   An uneasiness came over our crew. They then turned their powerful lamps until we could see about twenty all told, all dressed
