    St Martins day is on Thursday the 11th November and there are many old customs and beliefs associated with this day. The Irish people always kill a duck or a goose or a chicken. The belief is that if they don't kill one of these birds and shed blood that the eldest one of the family will die before the year is out. They sprinkle the blood upon the door post. The reason why they do that we do not know.
