  1. About 50 years ago there lived a local Poet in Garden St. Ballina named Mickey Rooney who composed a number of poems.
    It was he who founded the Stephanites Football Club, and he wrote a famous local song for the club, beginning "Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll raise the ball on high" which is still sung by the team when going on the field to play.
    There is another poet connected with this school. Fred R Higgins who is now living in Dublin.. He was taught in this school until he was 13 years of age and he has written a lot of poems and books since.
