- The houses of long ago are very different from the houses we now live in. There was but a few big houses and in these the landlord lived, all the other houses were small and farmers lived in them.
These houses were thatched, the thatch being made of rushes procured in the bog or sometimes made of straw. There was a bed in the kitchen and this bed was always made in the home. It was placed along the side wall.
The fireplace was at the gable end, turf fir trees and pine were used as fuel. The front of the chimney was made of stone or mortar. The floors were made of flags, but there was not floor in some houses only the earth itself. When there was no floor, sand was placed on the surface so as to prevent grass from growing. They had half doors and they have them in Crossmolina still.- Bailitheoir
