- HIDDEN TREASURE
Once upon a time a man named Ahern, from Lismore, had a habit of going to the County Tipperary for the potato-digging. One evening, with his spade on his shoulder, he entered a farmer's house where he hoped to get work.
The farmer gave him a bed in a barn. He woke up suddenly to find the house on fire. He ran out, leaving his clothes behind, thinking it was his own carelessness in smoking that caused the fire. He tried to get as far from it as he could.
It was a bitter, cold, night and he was almost naked. He met two policemen who stopped and questioned him. Having heard his story, one took off his overcoat and put it on Ahern, and asked him to come along with them. They told him that they were going to a graveyard to guard a vault wherein lay a coffin which held the remains of a very rich miner who had willed that several pots of gold in his possession should be buried with him.
