- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Tallow candles were used for giving light at night. The candles were made at home. The candles were lit with flint. This is how it was done. Salt petre was bought and steeped in water. When it was melted a piece of brown pater was steeped it was taken out and left to dry. When a light is needed a piece of pater was put on the flint and it was hit with a piece of steel. This would put sparks out of the flint which would light the brown paper.
- The old houses of the district were made of reidín. There were a kitchen a parlour two bedrooms and a small porch in them. It was whitewashed inside and outside. The furniture the kitchen contained was a hanging table, a settle, a coob, a dresser, and a few chairs. The roof of the house was thatched with wheaten straw. Sometimes with sedge from the burrow, also with rushes and oaten straw.
