    The making of rush crosses is a very old custom throughout Ireland. It is supposed to have come down from St. Bridgit the patroness of Ireland. On the day before St. Bridgit’s day the people go out and gather rushes and leave them outside the door till after sunset, then bring them in and make crosses. They do this in commemoration of St Bridgit because she used to make them while praying and wandering in the fields.
