- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)we sow sulphate ammonia or guana on the drills after we put in the manure. The manure that we put on is farmyard manure. My father plants his potatoes in drills. Sometimes my father plants a few potatoes in ridges. The ones that he puts in ridges are early potatoes. He makes the drills with the plough and he makes the ridges with the spade. Nearly every body used wooden ploughs long ago. There are very few used now. When we dig our potatoes we put them in pits. There were no spades made in the district long ago, they were all bought. There are different kinds of seed potatoes. The seed potatoes are cut into parts, and in each part there is an eye. These parts are called splits. Some of their names are:- Aran Banners, Aran Victors, Aran counsels, Epicures, King Edwards, Kerr's Pinks and Irish Whites. When we are planting [laying] potatoes we leave each split about one foot from each other. Then the drills are closed. Some neighbours help people who have no horses to work with themselves and some do not.
