  1. Now that the potatoes are below the ground the drills must be rolled with a roller. This tightens down the seed and breaks the lumps. Turnip sowers are sometimes used for the work and sometimes what is locally called, "a slipe" is used to break the lumps in the bottom of the drills. The "slipe" is a board about four feet long and nine inches wide which is drawn by a horse between the drills. The farmer stands on the board to add weight to it.
    At times if the soil is very rough it requires a double run of the slipe. After they are rolled they are run up again with a drill plough. When the tops are above ground they are grubbed. A grubber is shaped like a plough but it has four pronges for loosening the clay in the bottom of the drills. They are also hoed to clear all the weeds that interfer with the growing crop. After this they are moulded with a drill plough. This moulding enlarges the drill, and gives more room for the tubers to form later on. Sometimes a second moulding is required, an implement called a, "scuffle" is used.
