Her shock and surprise cannot be described when she found the cradle empty, and no child there.
The kitchen was searched and the house inside and outside, but no trace of the child could be found.
The alarm was raised, and neighbours scoured the country - far and near - and after three days fruitless search, the baby was found about twelve yards from the parents' home.
For the greater part of the time the snow was falling, and still the child, when found, was perfectly dry.
The people certainly believed that he had been taken out of the cradle by the fairies, and kept for the three days, and left back again at the spot at which he was found.
