    The battle fought, and set him free despite the English laws,
    And still that latent strength of soul, he wields at his command.
    No fear could paralyse his heart, no flattery stay his hand.
    When coice or pen is needed to peasants' right protect.
    The peoples' helper always proud, stands fearless and erect.
    Dark are the hills of Donegal, and darker still the deeds.
    That landlord rapine there has wrought amongst its moors and meads.
