- It is the custom on New Year's day not to throw out any water or ashes or to give anything away, for it is said that if anything is thrown out on that day the New Year's luck is thrown out. All the potatoes are washed and most of the necessary work is done on the Eve of the Feast so that no water will have to be thrown out on the following day.
