- (continued from previous page)churn and any one entered the house while the churning was in progress was compelled to assist at it, lest by any chance they would take the butter off the milk by some spell. People believed that evil-minded neighbours clould make their churning operations a labour in vain by milking their cows before sunrise on a May morning to the accompaniment of some weird incantations ending up by driving a harrow-pin into the ground in a corner of the field. Discovery of this harrow pin by the aggrieved party was the only means of breaking the spell. On this account people usually(continues on next page)
