- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)According to Local tradition this castle was built by McClancy not as a stronghold but as a place or refuge or isolation for his daughter. It is said at one time small-pox was ravaging the district arounf McClancy becoming alarmed for the safety of his daughter determined to remove her far as possible from the contact with any of the inhabitants of the surrounding district. He therefore built the castle for purpose stated. But sad to relate the contracted the dread disease and died of same.There is no trace of any castle on the adjoining shore from which McClancy is said to some have removed his daughter but there is the remains of an old church. Some people say that the castle ruins described above were his chief stronghold in the district.McClancy's territory of Dartry corresponded with the present-barony of Rossclogher. The Irish form of this name McClancy is Mic Flannacada. This chief who was an inveterate enemy of the English was conquered in 1641 and his terriroty confiscated.
