  1. Long ago in this district the houses were all thatched, with the exception of a few slated ones. They were thatched with rushes, corn straw, and wheat-straw, and some people thatched with heather.
    The old houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it was placed in a corner one side of the fire. It was called a settle-bed.
    The fire-place was not always at the gable but it was at the side-wall. The chimneys were made of stone and mortar.
    Sometimes the houses had windows without glass. They used sheep's skin instead. Old floors were made of cement.
    Hall doors were common long ago.
