- The following story was told to me by my father, Michael MacManus of Murhaun.
The land around Sliab-an-Iarainn is particularly suitable for the growing of potatoes. Even still potatoes are the chief food of the people and before the famine they were the sole food of the people. Because of the failure of the potatoes thousands of people died.
During this period a husband and wife and three children resided in the town land of Drumhall about a half mile from Sliab-an-Iarainn and two miles from Drumshanbo.
The wife died of hunger and the husband set off with thbody to the old grave-yard on the mountain road. On the way the husband died under the heavy load.(continues on next page)- Collector
