- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)a bad man and given to hanging Catholics. He had a gallows on the two hills beside Carrick on Shannon. This morning he was hanging at Carrick and a message arrived at Keon brook. He was a stutterer. OReilly saw his excitement and caught him by the shoulder and said 'Steady yourself'.
All the boy could say was Nes b b bet hanging away at Carrick.
OReilly became enraged and shouted Get me the best horse.
With pistol in hand he galloped over hedge and ditch for Carrick. Nesbett saw him coming and fled. There was a man in the gallows and was saved as well as the number that were chained to the trees. That's why that hill on the Roscommon side of the Shannon between Carrick and the railway station is today called the Liberty and because of the hanging the workhouse hill got the name Gallows Hill.
Nesbett was a Cromwellian and OReilly was a protestant-Irish - and a good master. He [held?] in lands rent-free.- Bailitheoir
