  1. There was a poet in my district. His name was Con Shine. There was another poet in my district and his name was Mat Donohie. Con Shine lived in the townsland of Sallowglen. Mat Donohie lived in the townsland of Mellechan. Con Shine was eighty five years when he died. And Mat Donohie was seventy one years when he died. The two of them were buried in Kilnaughten. There were no stories told how they got the gift of poetry. The power of verse making came to them suddenly. Con Shine made up a verse about Gortenavelg or the bed of twigs. Mat Donohie made a song about his son Jim Donohie the famous weight thrower. Isac Sullivan composed the Plucky leader he lives in Tarbert town. His name is Tom Fitzgerald and he cannot be put down. He composed the song because of the drilling of the Sirin Feiners. He composed in English only. The poets did not complete in song with each other. The poet was simply a labouring bay. He composed the song before the rising of 1916. He was able to read and write. The people looked upon him with pleasure and delight.
