“Gleamed the saly soft & mellow ¶ On the gentle plain of Meath”
This poem was translated from the Irish by Bishop Rich-d O'Connell of Ardfert and Ahadoe, died 1653
Gleamed the saltry soft & mellow
On the gentle plain of Meath
Brings low breezes fresh and mellow
Through the words scarce seem to breathe
And on Tara proud and olden
Circled round with radiance fair
Docked in splendour bright and golden
Sat the Court of old Laoghaire (pr. Loch-aird)
Chieftain with the fleasq of glory
And the coulin flowing free
Priest and brehon bent and hoary
Soft-tongued bard and seanachie
Silence frilled the sunny ether
Eager light on every eye
As in banded ranks together
Stranger forms approacheth nigh
Tall and stately white beards flowing
In bright streaks adorn the breast
Cheeks with summer beauty glowing
Eyes of thoughtful holy rest
And in front their stately leader
