  1. In John Horgan's fort in Ballinglanna there lived a branch of the Nelan family. This Nelan man's wife was a Limerick woman known as Lady Manarey. When he was in a hunt in Limerick the deer crossed a big gate and he followed close behind Lady Manarey came second in the hunt. She fell in love with the horseman and followed him to Kerry. They lived together in their home in Ballinglanna. They made a pile of gold in tobacco smuggling. This gold was buried in two firkins under the bed. When the man of the house died her cousin Catherine Mc Loughlin came to keep her company.
    This Catherine knew where the gold was hidden and when Lady Manarey died her cousin was left in charge of the house. The day after her funeral the Connors of Sandford Castle came looking for the gold as they claimed to be the nearest relatives (Tade Connor's mother being a Nelan woman) and also the Landlords of the place and all it held. Catherine Mc Loughlin showed them where the gold was buried.
    They dug it up and carried it to Sandford and the firkins were so heavy that it took four
