- A Local Poet
Some one asked me some time ago, if I ever heard of a poet that lived at Brackhill Cross named Sylvester oShea (Brackhill Cross is quite close to the Castlemaine Railway Station) I replied I did, and that he flourished at the time oConnell was making his great effort to Repeal the Union. He was a personal friend of the Liberator, because he seemed a bit richer after an interview than before. He praised the great man in the following lines:-
Thrice welcome, brave oConnell,
Our guiding star, through bondage drear
Who freed us without ransom
Throught torture and through galling chain
Who wrought Emacipation
Against the tyrants, made a stand
And now in spite of fate, he'll win
Repeal for Paddy's Land.
He spoke at a meeting held in Milltown in favor of some candidate whom oConnell put forward, in the opening words of his speech he said "Cheers for the great Liberator(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
