- Marriages take place in my district before and after Lent. The month of May is supposed to be unlucky for marriages, and Fridays and Saturdays are the unlucky days.
It was a custom long ago for straw-boys to visist the houses on a marriage day. They were called straw-boys, because they used to be dressed in straw.
They used to come into the houses and sing and dance. The first one they would ask out to dance was, the bride, and then they all would dance the whole night long.
Then the straw-boys are brought into a room and given a nice supper, and near morning they go home. The bride stays in her own house for a month, and then she returns to her husband's house.- Bailitheoir
