  1. In olden times marriage customs were different to what they are now. When a young man wanted to get married he had to look around for a suitable girl that would have a fortune (an Spré).
    Then the parents of both parties start match-making and sometimes this lasts for days owing to disagreements. The bridegroom to be, had to tell the number of acres of land he possessed, the number of cows, 'dry cattle', sheep, pigs, poultry etc in his possession. She would then, on her "speakers" would, stipulate a certain sum of of money to be her fortune on being made mistress of that house.
    When the match is settled the wedding day is appointed and on the morning of that day the bridegroom and his party of friends
