About a mile from Maynooth we have a very ancient building called the Obelisk. It was built in the very bad time by Lady Louisa Connally. The stones for building were taken from a quarry about two miles away. There were now carts or horses used at the carting of the stones. There was a chain of men from the quarry to the building. As the stones were quarried they were handed from one man to the other until they reached the building. The men were paid 1 1/2 d per day.
