- The merry maid is half a man and a fish. From the head to the waist she is a woman with a lovely yellow head of hair. From the waist down to the tail she is like a fish. In times gone by if she appeared to a ship one of the passengers should be thrown out into the sea or she would drown the ship, that's why her picture is put on the front of every ship.
