I got this story from Mrs Gibbons. Ballynew, Castlebar.
Age over 70 yearsThere is a river flowing beside Fitzgerald's house and there is a pot gf gold hidden in it. Some divers came over from England and went down and found the pot of gold. They pout chains on to it, and they pulled it up but when it reached the top of the water the chains broke and it fell into the river. The diver went down and put chains on to it again but when it reached the surface the chains broke once more. He went down again and chained it but the same thing happened. The diver said that if he got all the money in the world he would not go down again.
It is said that he saw a big serpent around the pot the third time he went down.
