- The houses that were in the district long ago were very simply made. The walls were made of heather and daub mixed together. They used to go to the bogs and dig up the old deal with a spit. The spits were long bars of iron they used to put in the ground to search for the deal. They then cut the deal in pieces long enough to provide for the roof. There was no glass in the windows they only put bags of straw to keep out the cold and when the day came they took down the bags to let in the days light. They made the doors of rods woven in and out through each other. There were no chimneys only smoke holes. These smoke holes were usually in the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
