- A great famine broke out in Ireland in 1847 and a blight came on the potatoes and they all rotted. The people ate the bad potatoes and took fever and died by the roadside in thousands. The people had no money to bury them, so they had to dig holes and bury them. Old people who are alive can tell all about it. There are many places where people are buried such as at the workhouse, and at the back of our house. There are many old graves about Ballina. No one would go into a house where anyone was dead during the famine.
