Crotty the robber resided in the Comeragh Mountains and had his den there. He was persued from time to time by the Military and Police, but eluded them for a considerable number of years. He was at length arrested by the military and lodged in Waterford Jail. He was tried and sentenced to be hanged. When the morning came for his execution he shouted from the scaffold “ Is there any man here from Rathgormac or Clonea. There is a boot of gold under its lake with a horse shoe drawn out on the rock”. It was supposed that one man gave three days and three nights and got the boot of gold. It was a top boot coming to the knee.
