  1. Here are some of the customs I was told that were obseved on Hallowe'en.
    Granny was telling me that it was customary to eat all of a salt herring on Hallowe'en night, and in the middle of the night the man you are going to marry will give a drink.
    Another old custom at Hallowe'en is, you go out to the garden blind-folded and pick a cabbage stalk. If the stalk is long and straight your future husband will be tall and good-looking, and if it is small and crooked, your future husband will be small and not very good-looking.
    Another old Hallowe'en custom is, to go into your bedroom at twelve o'clock, by yourself, and take a candle with you. When you look into the mirror you will see your future husband looking over your shoulder.
    Still another custom was, getting cabbage stalks and going round the houses and banging at the doors. Another was making torches with the stalks by taking out the soft centre and
