- A churn is about five feet high, and it is broader at the top than the bottom. It is about two and a half feet broad at the top. The churn-dash is about seven feet long. In summer the butter is made about once or twice a week, and in winter about once a week. The butter is made by hammering the dash up and down, and it takes about half-an-hour until the butter is made. When it is finished the butter is at the top of the milk. The buttermilk is mostly given to calves.
