  1. The kind of houses long ago were made of sods and roofed with rushes or heather and the rushes were got growing round the fields and the heather was got on the moss banks. he old houses had a bed in the kitchen and it was placed in the corner near the fire and was called an out shot. The fireplace wasn't always in the gable wall, sometimes it was in the middle of the floor and i was never in the corner or against the side wall. The front of the chimney was made of blue clay and stones. The old people remember the houses to have holes in the roofs for chimneys and the old people remember the houses to have no glass on the windows and they put sods in instead. The floors were made of clay. Half doors are common and were formerly and turf was used for the fire. The old methods for giving light at night were: Splinters, candles and rushlights.
