- On the second of February in the year eighteen hundred and seventy eight, thirteen small fishing boats left Glengad pier in search of fish which was the only means they had of earning a livelihood.
They had scarcely reached fishing ground when an awful storm of both wind and rain arose which had been threatening for a few days before. The men tried their best to reach the shore but all their efforts were in vain. On account of rain falling in torrents and the mountainous waves caused by the high wind they were unable to return. They nearly all perished except the crews of a few boats that were blown about on the waters for several days until at last they drifted into the highlands of Scotland. The crews were treated very nicely there and were able to reach home once more safely.
