“Long ago dress was a very important item in every household . . .”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)wearer. The quality, make and shape were regulated according to different classes of society.
In olden times clothes of a loose cloak-like appearance was usually worn, brought together with large gold brooches or gold laces with the upper classes.
Late they were made tight fitting and buttons were introduced and have continued down to our own day. In our grandfathers time the tailors went from house to house to make clothes for the household.
Those were generally made of flannel and frieze, woven from the wool of sheep, carded and spun by the women of the household during the long winter nights, with the light of dipped rushes and bog-deal fires.
