Up! Act! nor be backward with heart, voice, nor hand
Till the king-fiend of curses is swept from our land
Heave up the old land into daylight again-
The smiled on by Heaven - a praise among men
Wring the curse from heart wipe the stain from the soul
Roll her out among nations an island of God!
I don't know if this was ever printed. The writer was a "Hedge" School teacher for some time in Ballyboy, Manorhamilton Co. Leitrim (with whom my father was at school in the early fifties I think) was sometimes known as Alaster Wilson but at his own request more often called "Barney Maglone". The site of his "Hedge" School is now the home Pat Gilquinn, C.C. Ballyboy, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim.
He always wore a cloak & slouch hat after manner of G.K. Chesterton.
My father said that he was for years (Master Wilson, I mean) employed on papers in Belfast and Enniskillen.
Barney Maglone died about 1870. "Barney Maglone" died about 1870.
