    amuck they buried money. Two men found the money near Drumshanbo. A great quarrel arose between the two men. One man was killed and the other man was later hanged for murder at Carrick-on-Shannon. Severals joined the French at Drumshanbo of whom Tom Gilhearney, Tomas O Catain known as "Captain Bock" and Lynch known as "the White Captain" were the most noted.

    After the French were defeated at Ballinamuck the country was over run by soldiers. The Hessians were English soldiers who came to Sliab-an-iarainn to punish the people who helped the French. They hanged some of the people from a tree on Slib-an-Iarainn and this tree is still pointed out by the natives. The word "Hustian" can still be heard in the district and is used when speaking of a rough or evil person.
