    Rush Candles.
    Long ago there was no lamp oil and there were no candles like what we have now. The people if Ireland made candles from rushes and used them to give light in their houses.
    The green rushes were cut or pulled in the months of July or August, they were than cut into lengths of about nine inches. They were then peeled. All the green coat was taken off them except one very narrow strip. If all the peeling was taken off the heart of the rush would not stand straight. The peeled rushes were then tied in bundles and let in a dry place till required for use. When the candles were wanted a bundle of the peeled rushes were taken down and dipped in melted butter or in some other kind of melted fat or oil.
