1. The Potato Crop

   The potatoe crop.
   There are potatoes grown on our farm every year. There is an acre under potatoes usually. My father prepares the ground every year. The manure is put out with donkeys. This is the way the ridges are made. The ground is "cut" out with a plough or a "loy" then the manure is spread in the middle of the ridges, and then the ground is turned up on the manure with a plough then it is "hearted" with mould. There were wooden ploughs used long ago but there are not any now. Some of the spades were made in forges and others were bought. Neighbours help each other planting the potatoes. They usually lend their horses. There is a little of fertilizer shaken beside every stalk. Then they are moulded and this mouldering is called shovelling. The digging is done with a spade in our district and the way it is done. You take out a stalk and cut it up and see are there any potatoes on it if there are they are left on the
