A horse's shoe is often hung in the byre - over the door - to bring luck it is often covered with silver paper. When cows are being sold red ribbons are often tied to their tales. This is supposed to bring good luck. Also this is done with calves. It is thought that when a stranger looks at a calf that hasn't this ribbon on him, he begrudges him and thereby causes the calf to die.
When a cow is milked for the just time after calving a teaspoonful of salt is thrown into the gallon in the name of the of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost. A blessed candle is also lighted. Others believe in dipping their fingers in the milk from when they leave a few streams of milk take from the cow.
Often an iron spoon is put in a nest while the hen is hatching. It deadens the sound of thunder of any other sound that might kill the birds in the eggs. If children get eggs from anyone to see, they usually mark them if they are selling them with other eggs so us to know them pow from the rest. In this case a cross is put on them. Often a straw is sticking to a hen and when this occurs people think that a stranger is coming into the house
